O Jesus, Sweet Jesus

Release me from these chains of unbelief,
these familiarities of habit, these mediocrities
plaguing mankind at every turn,
apathy awaiting at every corner
as unrest sleeps in every bed,
stagnancy stalking in the shadows of doubt;
release me from all mental prisons,
all forms of slavery clinging to the past —
O Jesus, sweet Jesus,
enlighten my weary soul with truth —
until perfect freedom is all that remains.

Lead me through these forests of darkness,
these towering trees of torment, these markings
glowing between the space of shades,
symbols slurring the speech of sight
along a winding path too dark to see,
ambivalences crawling and biting at my feet;
lead me through all spiritual wastelands,
all empty promises and vain ambitions —
O Jesus, sweet Jesus,
speak sweeter words than seductive lies,
drawing my soul with cords of love
to a resting place of your kindness —
until the hollow ways of the world fade away
into their own oblivion, forever lost
to the errors of their faithless wandering —
O Jesus, sweet Jesus,
take me home to you.
