Deeper In, Higher Up
Deeper into the Presence of God
until the shadows flee away,
and the light that shines from His face
illuminates the internal landscapes;
until wounds of abandonment are healed
by the Balm of Gilead, and memories
of most horrific days are taken away,
and the soul can learn to breathe again;
until rage and anger are consumed
by undisturbed oceans of peace,
and the sounds of mortal misery
have finally — finally — ceased;
deeper into the Presence of God
until other voices fade away,
and all that’s allowed to remain
is the smell of petrichor in the brain;
higher up into the Presence of God
until eyes can see above the foggy terrain,
and the clouds that released the rain
are beneath the wings that spread again;
higher up into the Presence of God
until the worldly burdens are no more,
and everything that God has in store
is an open sky like an open door.
