Mutual Rest

Lounging in a car,
your head on my chest
as the stars and yellow moon
linger and shine overhead,
and our shared breath
fills the space with gentleness;
your weight upon me resting
in our mutual rest,
relieved from worldly demands
that steal away joy
in the constant hustling
of man’s vain ambitions;
this moment is sweet,
incensed with your perfume
and our shared essence
as we laugh at silly things,
filled with curious wonder
to explore with openness;
the car idles for hours
as we drift in and out
of our mutual rest,
unable to tell which dream
is the realer of the two
between two dreamy realms;
the cold breeze blows harshly
through our open windows
until we roll them up,
returning once more to rest
in our calmly shared breath.
