Those Days of Innocence
Before the days when life became darkness,
when joy and laughter were continual themes
imbuing every moment with richness of soul;
and when worries were a distant thought
floating away somewhere on a foreign breeze;
and when unity wasn’t manufactured
by forcing conformity to group-think,
but simply the nature of life —
before those darkest years of endless hell
were those days of innocence.
Perhaps they can be again.
Maybe we were never meant to outgrow innocence,
nor lose our purity to the worthless things,
but to preserve innocence as life’s blueprint.
The highest bidder should not steal childhood,
nor the foot of the proud touch the neck of the humble,
nor the simple things be convoluted,
but childlike joy should be protected
from every form of wickedness.
If only we would claim them back,
restoring the breath of those youthful ways
when life knew nothing of the thoughts of lack,
inspired by the passion of purest days —
redeeming a certain kind of resonance
from those days of innocence.
